HIGH winds have delayed off-peak piling work needed to build a new underpass under Hills Road Bridge, Cambridge.
Work restricting the bridge to a single lane was planned to finish on Tuesday but work has stopped today, as gusts of wind are too strong for a crane to operate safety. Work on the bridge continues but the planned piling work that restricts the bridge to a single lane has been postponed.
Bob Menzies, Head of Delivery for Guided Busway at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: "Drilling the first hole into the bridge took longer than we would have liked as the ground conditions were very hard.
"Work was done over the weekend to make up for the time that had been lost but the high winds have now made it impossible to finish the work by Tuesday as it is just not safe to use the crane that is needed.
"Because the holes must be drilled, filled with concrete and a steel cage pushed into them in that sequence we cannot just carry on with some parts of the work that do not rely on the crane."
Two lanes on the bridge have been open today (Monday) throughout the day and work will begin again when it is safe to do so. Depending on weather conditions the bridge could be restricted to a single lane during off-peak hours (9.15am to 3.45pm and 6pm to 11pm) for the rest of the week while piling work is completed.
