THE final section of track needed to complete the guided busway route from St Ives to Cambridge was laid yesterday.

The busway will open in late summer and offer people a reliable, fast and frequent public transport alternative to long, slow and frustrating queues on the notoriously congested A14.

Guided buses will be able to glide along the guideway without tackling traffic and it will only take 20 minutes to get from St Ives to the Science Park in Cambridge.

Cambridgeshire County Councillor Roy Pegram, local member for St Ives, said: "The busway is going to offer people one of the best bus services in the country. It is raising the bar for public transport in terms of quality and comfort. The route is also going to be a very quick way to travel.

"Residents who have already tested out a section of the track have told us they are amazed by how smooth and speedy the journey is on it. These are the people who are going to be using the service and I am pleased they have given it the thumbs up even before it has opened."

A date for the opening of the busway will be announced in the coming weeks.
