Town councillors Peter Reeve and Ian Curtis will meet Huntingdonshire District Council officers to find out if any of the town’s four cameras are at risk following the decision.

Parish and town councils in Huntingdonshire were asked to contribute up to half of the annual running costs for the cameras, after HDC said it could no longer foot the entire bill because of budget cuts.

Other town councils have agreed to contribute towards the costs. Huntingdon Town Council will be paying £39,710 towards the town’s 28-camera scheme, St Ives will pay £17,017 for its 12 cameras and St Neots £22,750 towards the town’s 13 cameras.

At a meeting in December, Ramsey town councillors voted against offering any financial contribution. Members have since been warned that could mean the town’s cameras being switched off. Two were axed last year following a review.

Cllr Reeve said: “When the council discussed it, we were told if we contributed to the service we would have got the two old ones back.

“It was felt the ones we have got are the bare minimum. Now we are worried we are going to lose our cameras.”

An HDC spokesman said: “Nothing has been agreed. Officers are meeting two councillors to discuss what they can do to move forward.”

Meanwhile Huntingdon Town Council voted to accept a draft service level agreement with HDC on CCTV provision, due to start on April 1, following an amendment.
