Mascot could represent charity in race
CAMBRIDGE could have a surprise representative at the Olympics - Cambridge United mascot Marvin the Moose.
The U’s have agreed a special loan deal with the Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge to allow Marvin to represent the charity in the Olympic Stadium 100 metre mascot race, which takes place on April 1.
Seventeen mascots are in contention for a place on the starting line and, with only 10 places up for grabs, a vote is currently being held on Facebook to determine who will take part, with the 10 mascots with the most ‘likes’ from voters set to get the nod.
Competition is fierce, and Marvin, who lists his favourite athlete as Great Britain 1500 metres star Mo’ose Farah, is up against the likes of Homer, the Cats Protection League mascot, and Ned the Bear from the National Deaf Children’s society.
A U’s spokesman said Marvin is very excited about the prospect of realising his Olympic dream, and that if he makes it through to the race he will be brought a new pair of shoes for the occasion.
The mascot race is part of the Gold Challenge scheme, which sees people taking on Olympic events to raise money for their favourite charities.
Voting closes on Monday, February 6. To vote for Marvin click the link to the right.
