Cambridge javellin star’s double Olympic aim
WITH eight months to go until the London 2012 Olympics, Goldie Sayers has already set her target for the games - breaking her own British record and bagging a medal.
The Cambridge javellin thrower has enjoyed mixed results this year. After returning from injury she performed well in several competitions but flopped on the big stage, only managing tenth in the World Championships in South Korea.
At the 2008 Olympics the 29-year-old finished fourth in the final, and is confident she can go one better this time around, providing she can beat the 65.75 British record throw she recorded in Beijing.
She said: “My actual aim is to break the British record in the Olympic final. I did that last time in the Olympic final and unfortunately it didn’t medal but I hope it could this time.”
“I love the Olympics and everything it stands for in terms of the celebratory side of it. It does inspire me much more than any other title.
“To get on the podium there would be fantastic and I am aiming for podium in London for sure. It’s going to be tough as the event has kind of gone through the roof in the last few years.
“But then at the same time there aren’t many people coming through so the top end is very high and I think if I can get a medal it will be unbelievable.”
With the outdoor season having drawn to a close, Sayers has moved to London and is five weeks into her winter training schedule.
“It is exciting to have London 2012 coming up,” she said. “It is a huge motivator and I do find Olympic year training a lot easier from a motivational point of view.
“I always tend to do better in Olympic and World Championship years. I am really looking forward to it. We are five weeks into training now, and so far, so good.
“It is unusual that having moved to London to train that there is something about the Olympics in the media every day. Normally it is not talked about until the April of that year. It doesn’t make you any more motivated than normal but it does make it a bit easier.”
