AN “inspirational” fundraiser from Bar Hill is set to take part in the Olympic Torch Relay.
Steve Storey will carry the torch for 300 metres as it makes its way through Cambridgeshire later this year on its way to the Olympic Stadium for the start of the London Games. He will find out the precise location of his stint with the torch when the final details are revealed next month.
The 47-year-old told Cambridge First he is expecting it to be an emotional experience.
He said: “I was in the London Marathon a couple of years ago and loved the whole camaraderie and support from the crowds as I was running.
“This will be even more special as many of my friends, family and colleagues have said they will be there to support me. I imagine it will be an emotional 300 metres of running!”
A designer by trade, Steve was nominated by Neil Svensen, chief executive of the Rufus Leonard design agency, where he has worked for 17 years.
Profoundly deaf since birth, Steve has raised a substantial sum for charity by taking part in the marathon and several Microsoft Challenge events.
Steve is also a trustee of Andy’s Ark, a Bar Hill charity that helps disadvantaged or disabled young people gain meaningful work in the motoring industry through education and training.
He has been involved in the organisation since its inception due to his friendship with founder Andy Kent, of Andy’s Kars.
“I’d like to demonstrate to young people that in the face of adversity, you can still go on to make a significant contribution in the workplace,” said Steve.
Once the torch relay is out of the way Steve, who lives in Bar Hill with his wife Donna, is looking forward to enjoying the Games.
He said: “I’m a fairly sporting person and I’ve always been inspired by the passion, dedication and training the Olympic athletes go through to be the best they can be. That’s always been a mantra to me. I was really lucky to get a ticket for the semi-final of the men’s football at Wembley.”
